Request

Request Received: 29 July 2020

West Cumbria Mining say their primary freshwater resource for processes on site such as coal washing would be abstraction from the Byerstead Fault.

1. What advice has been given to West Cumbria Mining from BGS as to the abstraction rates likely to be available from Byerstead Fault at peak production of coal?

2. Under FOI I ask for sight of groundwater-related monitoring and surveys undertaken by BGS for West Cumbria Mining in particular relating to the abstraction of freshwater from the Byerstead Fault.

Response

Response Sent: 20 August 2020

BGS has given no advice to West Cumbria Mining as to the water abstraction rates likely to be available from the Byerstead Fault. We also hold no groundwater monitoring or surveys undertaken for West Cumbria Mining and therefore exception 12(4)(a) applies in that BGS 'does not hold that information'.
