  1. Request received: 1 July 2024

    The information I would like to request is as follows:

    1. The total number of applications submitted and the number of those that were assessed (i.e. deemed eligible for funding);

    2. The overall number of applications awarded funding and a breakdown of how many of these were first-time applications and how many were resubmissions;

    3. The total number of applications within each innovation area and the number of those that were successful in each area;

    4. The average grant request and project size of the applications successfully awarded funding;

    5. The funding thresholds and average scores of successful applications;

    6. The percentages of successful applications that were Industrial Research and Experimental Development;

    7. The number of successful Industrial Research and Experimental Development projects that were (i) single applicant/partner, (ii) 2 partners, (iii) 3+ partner;

    8. The total funding allocated in this competition round.

    9. How many projects awarded went to project set up.

    1.I understand that the Full Economic Cost and Research Council Contribution columns refer to the money that was awarded (i.e. planned expenditure). The Full Economic Cost Expenditure and Research Council Contribution Expenditure columns refer to the money that was actually spent by the end of the project. The Paid To Date column refers to the amount of money that the EPSRC has currently paid towards the project, and therefore the Balance column is the difference between the incurred cost ( Research Council Contribution Expenditure) and the amount actually paid (Paid To Date). Is that correct?

    2.Based on the above assumption, I see that there was £80k FEC budgeted for equipment, but only £50k FEC spent. However, in the detailed expenditure report it shows that £29,994 + £27,605.10 +£21,654.30 + £720 = £79,973.40 was spent on equipment. Have I missed something?

    3.I see that there was an exception cost of £29,973.40, but the details are not provided - what was this for?

    4.There was £10,772.60 budgeted for travel and subsistence costs, but only £1,645.56 spent - Where is the rest allocated?

    5.In the proposal, the "Other costs" category was broken down into £24,000 for consultancy, £40,000 for consumables and £1,500 for a computer. Please can I ask for a similar detailed summary in the expenditure? In particular, I'd like to know what the consultancy costs were allocated to.

    6.(Redacted)

    Please confirm whether two or three different researchers were employed on the project (I am not requesting any identifying details such as names, so this shouldn't be against GDPR guidelines; I only want to know the total number of different researchers employed).

    Under the Freedom of Information Action, I would like to request the following information regarding the funding of the ARI Database (see https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-one-stop-shop-to-find-the-topics-government-is-interested-in-researching)

    I note this is funded jointly by the Government Office for Science (GoS) and ESRC, hence this is being sent to both bodies.

    1) Total costs associated with the initial development and launch of the database.

    2) Committed costs for on-going maintenance and development

    3) Reports / evaluations provided since launch to the funders on the performance of the database

    Note: I cannot find any details of the funding for this project using the UKRI grant funding search tool.

    Final Clarification Received: 4 July 2024

    Please can communication spending be provided for:

    1. UKRI across time (from 2018 onwards if possible)

    2. ESRC across time (from 2010 onwards if possible)

    Total and split by staff/non staff time if possible.

    To facilitate an analysis of how these costs have changed across time, please total costs for such roles (no individual salaries are required) be provided separately by calendar year (from 2010 or shortly thereafter).

    UKRI have previously given detail for UKRI spending for 2023 here https://ukri.disclosurelog.co.uk/case/85b06054-43e1-4e30-ad47-6bc257a9703e.

    * Communication spend data for MRC to be provided for MRC Head Office and if possible, for the UK Dementia Research Institute, the Francis Crick Institute and Health Data Research UK (HDRUK) separately.
