I am looking to retrieve information to formulate a comprehensive understanding of the growth and potential gaps in support for this sector, and inform future activities, the specific information I am interested in includes:

    · The total number of Life Sciences companies that applied for funding through various initiatives, including but not limited to, Smart grants, Collaborative Research and Development (CR&D), and Biomedical Catalyst (BMC).

Please provide this data separately for each year from 2018 through 2022.

    · The total number of these companies that were successful in securing funding, again separated by year and by initiative.

I have seen from previous published Freedom of Information requests to UKRI that the Assessing Matrix, used by Assessors to score bids, are available to be shared.

Please can you share with me, either under the FOI scheme or from Innovate UK support, the Assessing Matrix for all current Innovate UK grant schemes?

For reference these are the schemes listed on the Innovation Funding portal as of the 16th August 2023.

    Clarification Requested: 17 August 2023

We have received your email from the Innovate Customer Support team listing 7 competitions for which you would like assessor matrix/scorecards. Please could you clarify if this is the full information you require or whether you are still interested in the Assessing Matrix for all current Innovate UK grant schemes listed on the Innovation Funding portal as of the 16th August 2023?

Clarification Response received: 17 August 2023

Please can I request them all current Innovate UK grant schemes listed on the Innovation Funding portal as of the 16th August 2023?

As an aside, it would probably save Innovate UK a lot of time if these were made available in the Supporting Information when the scheme was published and also the success rates for the scheme, based upon previous rounds, was also published for transparency.

Is it possible to make a request for aggregate data free of charge? Specifically, within a 12 month time window, the proportion of UKRI funding opportunities/schemes where the applicant was eligible for 80% or greater of FEC if successful? Ideally as a whole, and separately split by the major UKRI funders.

  5. Request Received: 4 September 2023

My FOI request relates to the consultation regarding the proposals for REF 2028. It is stated on the UKRI website that: "These modifications come after a full two years of activities during which the UK higher education funding bodies, as part of the Future Research Assessment Programme<https://www.jisc.ac.uk/future-research-assessment-programme> (FRAP), reviewed how national research assessment is carried out in the UK. They include wide consultation with the sector, such as roundtable events and two written consultations, and a number of commissioned evidence reports and analyses." I would like to understand the details of the consultation process, specifically:

    1. Who was invited to take part in these consultations and roundtables? Please provide full details of who was eligible to take part in the consultations and roundtables, how they were made aware of the consultations and roundtables and the time period over which the consultations took place and the number of roundtables and when they occurred.

    2. Please provide details of who responded to the consultations and attended the roundtables, including how many people took part.

    3. Please provide the materials sent to participants in the written consultations, the questions asked, and the expected format of responses.

    4. Please provide any materials distributed to attendees at the roundtables and presentation materials used at the roundtables.

    5. Please provide any reports or analysis generated as a result of these consultations.

I have studied with interest the EDI data presented for UKRI and research council applications and awards here: https://www.ukri.org/what-we-do/supporting-healthy-research-and-innovation-culture/equality-diversity-and-inclusion/diversity-data/

Is it possible to obtain this data at an institutional level?

Clarification request sent: 6 September 2023

The UKRI published EDI data includes number of applicants and awardees and the award rate for three role types and four characteristics, from 2014-15 onwards. Please could you clarify whether you are interested in a specific financial year or role type? Preliminary scoping has identified that we would need to suppress much of the data for individual financial years to protect information related to protected characteristics at institutional level. In that regard we propose aggregating as much of the data as we can and providing a five-year-cumulative for total applicants/awardees (the role types combined). Please confirm if this would be acceptable to you. Further aggregation may also be needed.

    Clarification received: 6 September 2023

Thank you for responding, I am happy with the proposal to aggregate the data in the way described.

  8. Request Received: 20 September 2023

While I understand UKRI publishes research council success data annually, I'm keen to know if all applications received by research councils are included in the reported success rate, and how of those submitted actually make it to the panel stage for consideration.

For 2022-23, please can you provide the following information [for MRC, ESRC & EPSRC]:

Please state how many applications for response (or 'responsive') mode research funding (excluding new investigator grants) were considered by [each council] in total in 2022-23, and the total amount of funding requested by these bids.

Please state how many of these were rejected by a) expert reviewers b) office-based decisions (otherwise known as desk rejections) and c) how many were withdrawn by the research organisation on eligibility grounds.

Please also state what number and what proportion of total funding bids were screened out overall using the shortlisting/triage process, and what number of bids went through the panel stage.

Please also state how many projects were eventually funded, and the total amount of funding awarded.

Please also state the total amount of funding applied for by all applicants considered in 2022-23.

    New investigator grants

For applications considered in 2022-23, please can you provide the following information [for MRC, ESRC & EPSRC]:

Please state how many applications for new investigator grants were considered by the MRC in total in 2022-23, and the total amount of funding requested by these bids.

I'm writing to make a freedom of information request to ask for the release of the list of companies and funds awarded in the West Yorkshire area that have received funding from UKRI to support levelling up.

I'd also like to ask for the release of the list of companies and funds awarded under the Strength in Places Fund, across the UK and in West Yorkshire.

  10. Request Received: 15 September 2023

I'm writing to ask about which grants are available to support innovation in West Yorkshire, in particular in Wakefield area.

In the levelling up plan, the government announced R&D investment in regions outside the south east. This funds would be available to Innovate UK, and other institutions, under the current financial review period.

However, I cannot find any grant available for the few biotech companies that exist in West Yorkshire. So, where is the money going?

How much money has been made available for this region and how is it being distributed? Is it going to SME or universities?

Therefore, I am making a freedom of information request to ask the budget allocated for West Yorkshire for the financial year 2023/2024.
