The previous data [provided in FOI2020/00242] show the extent of under-representation of ethnic minority committee members in research councils. For committee members, participation appears to entirely absent in a large fraction of committee meetings. I would like to understand the factors that affect participation (see part 1 below).

It is also important to acknowledge that individual actions, policies and practices are likely to impact different ethnicities differently, as is the case of many other parts of society. It is therefore important to understand the numbers associated with particular ethnicities. This is why in the previous FOI I asked "If possible, please provide ethnicity data for each ethnic category (for example, Black, Asian or White colleagues)". I note that on that occasion it was not provided, and recognise that this was probably to protect the identities of individuals. In part 2 below, I would like to request data in a form that is specific to ethnic categories, and at the same time in a format that protects personal information and individuality. Aggregating data across time is an effective research strategy and should allow you to protect anonymity.

With this in mind, please could you provide the following data? I make the request in two parts below.

    Part 1:

Any written guidance issued to UKRI staff about the process of selecting and inviting individuals in the FOI[2020/00242] to committee meetings.

The median number of invitations to committee meetings issued to individuals over the period in the last FOI. Note that this collapses across years and summarises data across individuals, so probably eliminates the risk of identifying particular individuals. Therefore, please use the following ethnic categories at minimum (Asian, Black, Mixed race, White and uncategorised). For comparability, please use data for the same individuals as those contributing in the previous data release.

    Part 2:

Please look again at the data used to generate the previous FOI release, and this time provide data of the same type pertaining to specific ethnic categories (at minimum, Asian, Black, Mixed race, White and uncategorised). Please aggregate data across the five years in order to protect individual identities and confidentiality.

  4. Request Received: 19 July 2021

I submit a request under the Freedom of Information Act for:

All records in the possession, custody or control of the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) describing the isolation of a SARS-COV-2 virus, directly from a sample taken from a diseased patient, where the patient sample was not first combined with any other source of genetic material (i.e. monkey kidney cells aka vero cells; liver cancer cells). Please note that I am using "isolation" in the every-day sense of the word: the act of separating a thing(s) from everything else. I am not requesting records where "isolation of SARS-COV-2" refers instead to:

    • the culturing of something, or
    • the performance of an amplification test (i.e. a PCR test), or
    • the sequencing of something.

Please also note that my request is not limited to records that were authored by the MRC or that pertain to work done by the MRC. My request includes any sort of record, for example (but not limited to) any published peer-reviewed study that the MRC has downloaded or printed.

In other words, my request is in relation to information pertaining to any record of correct isolation and/or purification of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, where the virus has been isolated from genetic and other bodily material, centrifuged and purified so only the viral particles remain.

If any records match the above description of requested records and are currently available to the public elsewhere, please provide enough information about each record so that I may identify and access each record with certainty (i.e. title, author(s), date, journal, where the public may access it).

  5. Request Received: 25 August 2021

I have been looking for a MRC Grant application from 1971. The grant number is G/971/288/C and the title of the project: 'a behavioural approach to obsessional neurosis'. The grant was awarded to Dr. Stanley Rachman, who was working as a clinical psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry at the time.

I cannot find the MRC file relating to the above grant at the National Archives. This is strange as I have been able to access two other MRC-funded grants relating to Rachman's work (in collaboration with Issac Marks)- both of which I submitted, and was granted, an FOI request.

The MRC should have reference to all the grants awarded. Any details relating to Rachman's 1971 grant (G/971/288/C) would be greatly appreciated. I've looked everywhere- and it would be extremely unlikely that any record of this application wasn't in existence/had been destroyed!
