  1. Request Received: 09 November 2021

I am requesting any information on the contribution given by Stonewall, at any time and in any form, to the drafting of your Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy and attached documents and forms.

  2. Request Received: 23 September 2021

Thank you for your email and explanation. If I narrow my request down to only AI/Data Science, would it please be possible to determine how many applications for UKRI submitted vs funded by year (from January 2015 till the end of 2020)?

I have the totals data from their published stats. It would be very helpful to understand how many of the projects were AI.

On 24 September 2021 we sought clarification informing you that:

"The published data detailed in your request is actually from NIHR, which is not part of UKRI. UKRI is therefore not able to comment on this data. As stated in our response to your previous request (FOI2021/00395) UKRI does not hold any information on programmes which are run by NIHR, which falls under NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care.

Please could you therefore clarify which UKRI programmes you are interested in, in relation to AI/data science applications."

    Clarification received 7 October 2021:

Thank you for your email. I have attached the letter in your email to me on the 16th of September (Reference: FOI2021/00395), in which it states that although the UKRI holds this data, I need to narrow my request.

My request is for the number of awards vs applications made for grant funding and the amounts applied for AI and biotechnology over the last five years.

I am asking for totals of how many of the applications made AND awarded were for AI and biotechnology projects. The data currently provided on the website in the Excel document (attached) only provides information about the funded projects, not about how many applications were made.

I am collecting this information as part of the research I am currently busy with.

  8. Request Received: 12 November 2021

    Clarification Received: 30 November 2021

On the 7th of December 2020, you sent me a response to the above request (FOI2020/00339 [IR2020/00384]). I am now requesting that the number of unsuccessful applications that you provided is broken down by the stage at which applications were rejected (initial sift, peer review, panel review, etc.), dating back to 2011 or whenever your records were digitised, in order to keep retrieval time below the spend threshold for FOI requests.

Additionally, I am also requesting that the total number of applications is broken down by funding mode (Early Career/Standard Grants, etc.) for the same period - either back to 2005, as per my original request, or if retrieval time for manual records would exceed the spend threshold for FOI requests, to whenever these records were digitised.

    Clarification:

With regards to part 1 of my request, I would ideally like the data from 2005. However, I had recently made a request for this data (ref FOI2021/00358), and in your response was advised that since records were digitised in 2011, a manual check of the records from 2005-2011 would exceed the spending threshold under Section 12 of the FOIA. However, as this was only a test case from the AHRC and not from the rest of the funding councils, I thought it best to leave my timeframe more open, should other councils have digitised their records at earlier/later dates.

With regards to part 2 of my request, I was referring to the type of funding offered. I am specifically concerned with whether grants were made for Early Career Researchers vs Standard Grants, and whether funding was offered in accordance with a specific research 'theme' or programme. As per my request, I would like this data ideally back to 2005, but should this require manual retrieval and thus engaging Section 12, then to whenever records were digitised.
