I am writing to you as I am interested in information relating to UKRI Research Councils approach to EDI and specifically with respect to awards made for doctoral studentships by Doctoral Training Partnerships. To this end, please provide me with the following information for the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Medical Research Council (MRC) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

For [each council] overall and each of the Doctoral Training Partnerships included in the:

    • AHRC DTP2 (2019-2025) for each of the first 5 cohorts (commencing in 2019-2023)

    • BBSRC DTP3 (2020-2024) for each of the first 4 cohorts (commencing in 2020-2023)

    • ESRC DTP (2017-2023) for each of the last 5 cohorts (commencing in 2019-2023)

    • NERC DTP2 (2019-2023) for each of the 5 cohorts (commencing in 2019-2023)

Please provide the following information in electronic format:

    1. Total number of doctoral studentships awarded to Home (not international) candidates

    2. Number and percentage of these studentships according to the following indicators:

    • Either Index of Multiple Deprivation or Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation quintiles

    • Previous institution of candidate

    3. If data on any of these indicators is not collected, or if different EDI indicators have data collected on them by the NERC and its DTPs, please provide information on:

    a. Which indicators have data collected on them

    b. The relevant number and % overall and for each DTP awarded to candidates according to those indicators

    Clarification Received: 3 January 2024

While I understand that UKRI does publish EDI information by research council, this information is not broken down to the level of Doctoral Training Partnership (indeed it does not include whether the awards were through DTPs, CDTs or individually to institutional departments - as with the STFC). In addition, the published data is only available for those who started up until 2020/21, whereas I am looking for information on those starting their studies in the years 2019/20 - 2023/24.

Therefore, if I could get the information overall for each of the research councils requested and by each of its DTPs for the EDI indicators collected and filtered for UK nationality (I understand this will exclude students with settled status), it would be appreciated.
